GUIDE: How To Clean an ESD Mat

What is an ESD Mat?

ESD mats are designed to eliminate static on its surface and of objects placed upon it. It does this by having a conductive material embedded within the mat that collects the static and sends it to ground (earth).

Regular cleaning is required to ensure the mats maintain their ESD performance long term. The frequency of cleaning depends on how often they are used or how fast they get dirty.

ESD Mat Cleaner

The type of cleaning solution used is crucial to keeping the mat working as it should. Basic cleaning can be as simple as sweeping the mats or wiping them down with water. For tougher cleaning, ESD Mat Cleaner should be use. You shouldn’t use household multipurpose cleaners or any other cleaners not made especially for ESD mats. Common cleaning solutions may contain alcohol which can dry out these mats, causing them to lose static fighting abilities. Instead, opt for ESD mat cleaners such as Static Care ESD Mat Cleaner from Transforming Technologies.

Mat Cleaning Directions

Be sure to follow the manufacturers’ instructions for safe usage. Typically, these solutions either come in a spray bottle or gallon bottles for hand cleaning application. Simply spray the entire surface area with cleaner and use a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel to wipe the cleaner off. One application is typically enough to do the job.

ESD mats should be properly tested after cleaning to ensure they are rejuvenated and safe for use.
